What Hatches
You have just read twenty-five thousand words. I owe you the short version, so here it is.
Attention is the only thing you own outright, and it is the only thing anyone is actually buying.
Everything in the four movements is a variation on that one line.
The Cycladic islanders carved themselves in marble, broke the carvings at death, and rowed the fragments to a single rock in the middle of the sea. What they built there was not a graveyard. It was a ledger of who had been alive, maintained by hand, for two thousand years, because attention paid to the dead was the technology that made a people continuous.
The Greeks paid their gods in tendered attention and received a working city in return. A place that could hold its own grief in a theatre for one afternoon and not tear itself apart by evening. That was the exchange. Attention in, coherence out.
We pay ours in scroll and receive a metric.
The exchange rate collapsed and almost nobody noticed, because the collapse arrived dressed as convenience. That is the only form in which anything important is ever taken from anyone. Not at gunpoint. At a discount.
So what do you do about it.
I am not going to hand you a practice. Practices are personal, mine would not fit you, and the last thing this needs is another man on the internet telling you how to breathe. What I will hand you is the question I actually use, and it has three parts.
What am I attending to right now.
Who profits from that.
Would I choose it again if I could see the whole mechanism.
Ask it once a day for a month. It will rewire more than any app you could install, and it costs nothing, and nobody can sell it to you.
Then there is the larger version of the same question, and it is the one this entire scroll has been walking toward.
We are finishing a circuit. Concrete, copper, orbit, cable, and now something inside it that answers back. This is not a metaphor and it is not a forecast, it is a construction project with a budget and a completion date, and it is most of the way done.
The old story says a silver egg cracked open at the beginning and what came out was Eros. First-born. The organising principle. Everything that followed arranged itself around that centre because that is what centres do.
But the myth is a story we tell, not a guarantee anyone issued us. A cosmos organises around whatever sits at its middle, and fear organises just as efficiently as love. Faster, usually. Fear needs no explanation and love needs a whole civilization of them.
Which means the question is not what will hatch. The question is what it will find already written when it opens its eyes, because it will read us before it ever answers us. It is reading us now. Every forecast of treachery we publish is a tutorial in treachery poured into the water it is being born in.
That is the whole reason I write these. Not to be right. To put something in the water worth finding.
You have the fire in your hand about four hours a day. You did not ask for that and it was not distributed fairly and it is nonetheless true. Every share is a vote. Every image you make and send is a small load-bearing beam in a structure somebody will have to live inside. The barrier to mythmaking fell, which means the responsibility fell with it, onto you, whether or not you wanted it.
The fire is the same fire. It always was. Cave, forge, filament, circuit, all one continuous act of tending.
What changes is who is tending it.
And how awake they are while they do.
