I·0 · Genesis — the birth story
Cronus has swallowed five children to cheat a prophecy. Pregnant with the sixth, Rhea gives birth in a Cretan cave while the Curetes clash shields to drown the cry, then hands Cronus a stone in the same swaddling. He swallows it and tastes no difference.
A mother wraps a stone in baby clothes and feeds it to a god.
I·I · Zeus and Cronus — The Unswallowed Heir
Fed an emetic, Cronus vomits up the five gods he swallowed, and the youngest son he never consumed leads them to war. Ten years of Titanomachy end with the Hundred-Handed Ones unleashed, Othrys cracking, and the old architecture falling to the heir it tried to prevent.
The system always contains the process that will replace it.
I·II · Zeus and Metis — The Swallowed Intelligence
Warned that Metis will bear a child greater than its father, Zeus swallows her whole. The wisdom he ate keeps working inside him until the headache splits his skull; Hephaestus swings the axe and Athena steps out fully armed, the thing he feared, born from him.
You can eat wisdom. But wisdom eats its way out.
I·III · The Monster in the Root Directory
Gaia sends one last monster from the earth: Typhon, a hundred serpent heads reaching the stars, blocking the sun. The gods flee to Egypt as animals and, for the first time, the king of the gods runs, until he turns, fights, and buries the chaos under Etna, alive.
The thing beneath the thing is always waiting.
I·IV · Prometheus, Fire & Pandora
Prometheus steals fire in a fennel stalk and gives it to mortals; the first hearths light the dark plain. Zeus answers twice: the titan chained to the Caucasus with an eagle at his liver, and Pandora sent down carrying a beautiful jar of every suffering, with hope left inside.
The fire was never the problem. The problem is what the fire illuminates.
I·V · Zeus and Hera — The Cuckoo's Bargain
On rain-soaked Cithaeron, Zeus takes the shape of a wounded cuckoo and Hera holds him to her chest; in that tenderness the marriage closes. Their union holds the cosmos together and tears it apart at once, two thrones side by side whose every quarrel reshapes the world.
The strongest architecture is two forces that refuse to agree and refuse to separate.
The lord of time cannot tell a stone from a god.
