III·0 · Genesis — the birth story
The war is over and three lots sit in Zeus's hand. Zeus draws the sky, Hades the dead, Poseidon what is left: the sea. He walks down the cliff into the surf and the water rises to meet him. He does not swim. Beneath the surface waits an empire, two-thirds of everything.
Three brothers draw lots for the cosmos. One gets the sky. One gets the dead. One gets everything in between.
III·I · Poseidon's Monstrous Lineage
In a sea-cave under a shaft of noon light, the deep produces what the shore cannot name: Polyphemus, Pegasus, Triton, Charybdis, Chrysaor. None were planned. They erupted. The surface calls them monsters because it never built a category large enough for what pressure makes.
The abyss doesn't create monsters. It creates. The surface does the labeling.
III·II · Poseidon and Athena's Contest for Athens
On the bare rock of the Acropolis Poseidon strikes and the sea erupts from the mountain. Athena kneels and pushes a cutting into the crack; a small grey-green olive tree unfurls. The crowd goes silent. Athens chooses the useful over the spectacular, and the salt spring never stops seeping.
The sea is spectacular. The olive tree is useful. The city always chooses useful.
III·III · Poseidon and Troy
Poseidon built the walls of Troy, forty feet of stone fitted tighter than a blade. Laomedon refused to pay. Nine years into the siege he stands among the Greeks watching his own masterpiece hold, knowing every weak tower and drainage channel because he put them there. The walls are already falling.
Cheat the builder, and your fortress becomes your coffin.
III·IV · Poseidon and Odysseus
The ocean does not kill Odysseus. It gives him more ocean. Ten years of wrong islands and wrong winds, every shore retreating behind one more storm. Poseidon is not on a throne; the sea itself is his attention. Delay at divine scale is crueler than death, and it is also the curriculum.
The ocean doesn't kill you. It gives you more ocean.
III·V · Deucalion and the Deluge
Nine days of vertical rain and the world is one grey surface with rooftops drifting through it. On the last rock of Parnassus a tar-sealed wooden chest holds Deucalion and Pyrrha, the surviving backup. The rain stops. Pyrrha throws a stone over her shoulder. It softens. It stands.
The flood doesn't end the world. It reformats it.
The sky is what you see. The sea is what carries you.
